Mens Tournaments - Season 2007-2008

Donald Campbell Memorial Open - 23 September 07
Peter hands in tidy figures to lift trophy

Conditions were once again tough with only 12 birdies from the field as the CSS crept out to 71. The hardest par was not surprisingly the first where a 4 is good any day and the easiest par was the 12th which gave up three birdies.

In Division one scoring was a bit high with some testing pin positions making life even more interesting. Richard McDonald succumbed to the course but still managed a birdie at the 13th. Grant Maxwell had a wee purple patch with back to back birdies at the 14th and the 15th but even a strong back nine was not enough to challenge the leaders. Sandy Chisholm made birdie at the 12th.

Donald Mowat 81-9-72 was fourth and had a pair of birdies with putts dropping nicely at the 5th for a two and the 12th. Jock Eunson sun tanned and fresh from a Mediterranean cruise took third place with an 82-11-71. The best scratch score of the day went to Club Champion John O'Brien winning the scratch Trophy with 76-6-70 and birdies at the 6th and the 14th in a very tidy round. It was nice to see Peter O'Hare of the Thurso club 78-9-69 come out on top in the division with a birdie at the 6th to break the home stranglehold on the top spots in this season's Opens.

In Division Two Terry Mackay of Thurso GC made birdie at the 12th and Andy Mackay of Reay made a birdie two at the 5th. Fourth place was taken by Andy Bain 92-15-77 including a birdie at the 18th for the grandstand finish. Grant Coghill made a return to the podium 88-13-75 for third place. Making par figures was youngster Allyn Sutherland 86-17-69 to make second spot his own. In a class of his own with the lowest gross in Division Two was the big hitter Peter McCartney (Winner of the longest drive at the Durness Senior Open) cracking in very tidy figures of 81-13-68 to lift the Donald Campbell Trophy for 2007.
