Reay Junior Open -
12 August 07
A TOTAL of 65 juniors from the local golf clubs, including a large contingent from Brora, turned out to contest this year's Junior Open at Reay Golf Club on Sunday - making it the biggest entry for a number of years. Despite a terrible weather forecast and heavy rain in many parts of the county, Reay fortunately missed the worst of it and most of the competition was played in humid but dry conditions. A new section for those able to complete one hole, the Tichy Tigers, was keenly contested by seven players with Gregor Mackay and Connor Ross sharing first place from Kieran Chard. The Fairway Ferrets section for the youngest players was contested over three holes. Gregor Munro was the winner from Aidan Chard and Courtney McIvor. Gregor won the Dunnett Shield and Courtney the 3 Hole Cup as best girl. Twenty-four players featured in the Birdie Baggers section played over six holes. Again this was closely fought with Eleanor Tunn pipping Andrew Adamson and James Hawes for the top spot. Ross Munro and Eoin Gallagher completed the top five places. Eleanor also won the Alec and Don Mackay Shield. The 18-hole competition for the boys played off the junior tees resulted in some spectacular scoring, with Stuart Adamson (nett 59) fending off Kyle Sutherland (nett 61) to win this category. Struan Mackie, Jamie Henderson and Jack Bell took the next three places. In the main competition, Calum Stewart won the Reay Junior Open with a fine gross 80. The four-handicap player from Brora constructed a very tidy round on a course he had played only once before. Calum was presented with the AEA Technology Trophy by club captain Ian Ross. The handicap section was won by Allyn Sutherland from Reay Golf Club with a nett 66. Allyn is enjoying a really good season, having already won the handicap section of the club championship, and his efforts earned him the Northern Heating Supplies Cup and a handicap reduction. Second place went to Struan Gunn, from Brora, with a nett 69, while Hugh Tunn, another promising Reay youngster, took third place on nett 71. Sponsors were W. & D. Ross, Mrs J. Wallace, D.C. Mowat, Bank of Scotland, O'Brien Construction, Royal Bank of Scotland , A. & D. Sutherland and the Weigh Inn. Their support ensured that every player received a prize. The day was rounded off with a meal provided by Margaret Gibson and family.
