Mens Tournaments - Season 2007-2008

Links Leisure Stableford - 02 September 07
Gritty performance gives Gunny second trophy

The wind was howling and the rain was lashing down so it was a typical summer's day for golf this year. Conditions were dry underfoot and the course was in great condition with firm fast greens. The CSS was 72 but the competition was a reductions only due to the fierce wind which made the 4th the hardest hole with nobody making par not surprisingly with the wind direction nobody made par at the 1st, 2nd, 11th or the 17th. It was tough golfing with only 6 birdies and of course the 5th was the easiest par.

The competition was a Stableford and a few did their best to no return but in a Stableford there is no nil return, just no points on the holes not played. Donald Mowat (9) made a birdie at the 5th and this helped him to 28 points and fourth place. John O'Brien (6) finished well with a two at the 18th to accumulate 29 points. Colin Stewart (11) was making light of the conditions as he threw in a pair of two's with birdies at the 5th and the 7th for a total of 30 points and second place. Colin is making a habit of being runner up at the moment which is good golf but needs a bit extra for the silver.

Making a fine birdie at the 14th Alistair Gunn (7) rose above the conditions to make a very creditable 32 points with a gritty and determined performance. This win gives Alistair his second victory of the season. On Saturday it's the September medal with a good field expected as it's the last of the monthly medals before we enter the winter season which will be upon us shortly. Colin Stewart and Danny O'Hagan will be defending the medals.

Members are advised that following the postponement of the Ulbster Cup at Thurso last weekend due to unplayable conditions, if it is unplayable again, the Ulbster Cup may be transferred to Reay so Club competitions may be cancelled on the 15th and 16th of September. These will be rearranged.
