Mens Tournaments - Season 2007-2008

Matchplay Quaich - 30 September 07
Sandy just wins after a battle

One of the last of the summer competitions saw Alistair Gunn loch horns with Sandy Chisholm in the final of the singles Matchplay Quaich, Alistair playing off 7 was giving away 5 shots. It all started rather gentlemanly with the first hole halved. Sandy Chisholm struck first going one up at the second after an untidy double bogey from Alistair. The third was halved in fours and the match all square at the fourth as this time Sandy had an untidy double bogey. The short par three fifth was halved in par and Gunn got his nose in front with a win at the 6th to go ahead one up.

Chisholm had a shot at the fourth and while both had fours the shot came in and the match was back to all square. It was all nip and tuck and very tense as the 8th was halved. At the 9th Gunn was untidy and Chisholm one again got his nose in front to be one up at the turn. The 10th hole was halved and again at the 11th Chisholm took advantage of a shot to stretch his lead to two. The 12th was a disastrous hole for Gunn and Chisholm took a commanding three hole lead and was looking comfortable.

As is the way in Matchplay anything can happen and Gunn came back to win the 13th and the 14th courtesy of a very good birdie and the lead was reduced to only one hole. The last four holes are always difficult and great for the cut and thrust of match play as Chisholm restored his lead to two up winning the short 15th with a par. Gunn immediately retaliated with a very good par at the 16th to again reduce the deficit to one and a fighting chance of the match. The 17th is always very tough never mind being one down in a match play situation and Chisholm held his nerve to win the hole and the match by 2 and 1. The title of Matchplay Champion for 2007 goes to Sandy Chisholm after a well fought tussle between two seasoned campaigners.
