The CSS for the Edmund Nuttall Ltd was 68 and the scoring at the top was close as no less than eight shot a par round of 69 and six made a nett 68. The greens are shaping up for the Open giving up 19 birdies with the 5th surrendering four to the field. The hardest par was no surprise at the second and the easiest the 5th.
The competition clearly scared off the Reay Ladies as none entered however we were delighted to welcome five from Thurso and a Lady from St.Andrews. Third placed lady was Anne Simmonite from Thurso with figures of 96-19-77 improving by one shot on her last round at Reay. Anne made a birdie two at the 5th. The countback was necessary to separate the top two and Alison McDonald of St.Andrews had to settle for second by the narrowest of margins - a half shot. Alison made birdie at the 14th returning a very tidy card of 87-6-76. Best lady was Alison Campbell 99-23-76 of Thurso GC a popular and regular visitor to Reay and a winner after a number of attempts.
In Division two Danny O'Hagan had a classy birdie at the 16th with a great approach shot setting up a short birdie putt. Three tied on a par round and these were E.Ferrier and A.Swan of Thurso along with young Hugh Tunn from Reay. Kenny Chalmers of Thurso GC had a pair of birdie two's at the 5th and the 7th in his 81-13-68 to end up in third place. Reay heavyweights Bill McIntosh and Billy Dunbar muscled out the rest of the field on 68 to grab the top spots. Billy Dunbar made a wonderful birdie two at the 7th a tricky hole and his 84-16-68 was good enough for second place. On top was Bill McIntosh making his first decent score of the season with 86-18-68 to win Division two.
In Division one Chris Hobson made a two at the 5th and Alec Anderson had a two at the 15th. The 6th was birdied by Gavin Gunn and Fred Groves. Five shared the second best nett score of 69 led by Richard McDonald 76-7-69 with birdies at the 5th and the 14th, Billy Noble of Thurso 80-11-69 with a two at the 15th, Steven Prince 80-11-69 with a birdie at the 11th, Steve Efemey 78-9-69 with two birdies at the 5th and the 10th and Alistair Gunn 75-6-69. It was certainly tight at the top.
Third place went to Evan Sutherland 77-9-68 who lost out on the count back in a three way tie for nett 68. With the lowest gross of 70 Graeme Dunnett 70-2-68 was second with a pair of birdies at the 9th and the 13th. Winning the countback and first in Division One was Jim Meiklejohn 75-7-68 of Thurso and Jim managed birdies at the 13th and 15th which gave him the best back nine.
The winner of the Reay Gala Open was George Prince the marauder from Stornoway another Reay heavyweight blasting his way round in 80-13-67 with some powerful big hits off the tee and some finesse on the greens to be the 2007 Edmund Nuttall Reay Gala Open Champion golfer.
