Fred is only player to break par

The CSS was at 69 which showed conditions were fair. In a complete change from previous competitions the 4th was playing as the hardest par and the 6th the easiest with only seven birdies.
Young Steven Prince made birdie at the tough seventh and was in reasonable condition till he pressed self destruct on the 17th a notorious card wrecker and blew a winning score. Bruce Mackay not in the best of form recently made birdie at the 16th in a good back nine but still returned a respectable card of 80-9-71 which was good enough for fourth despite an indifferent front nine.
The lowest gross went to Club Champion John O'Brien with a 75. John was out in 40 which included birdies at the 6th and a fine two at the 9th which helped improve an untidy front nine. The back nine was very professional with no dropped shots coming home in par figures of 35 for third place and a total 75-5-70.
Colin Stewart 80-11-69 also had a tidy round finishing up level par for second place and a birdie two at the seventh, a very good effort. Rolling back the years Fred Groves was the winner of the President's prize showing a clean pair of heels to the field with 76-8-68 and the only score to break par. Out in 39 and back in 37 Fred was only one shot off the best scratch score and had a nice pair of birdies at the 6th and the 15th.
