Mens Tournaments - Season 2007-2008

Ronnie Wallace Open - 15 April 07
Cammie & Billy have good rounds for trophies

Conditions were excellent for the Ronnie Wallace Open which attracted a large field. The stats for the Open made interesting reading and highlighted what a tough and testing start it is at Reay, the first played the hardest with only 9 pars at an average of 5 on a par 3 and the 2nd was playing the second hardest. The 16th gave up a total of 6 birdies and there were 4 at the 14th and the easiest hole the fifth also surrendered 4 birdies and an eagle or better known as a hole in one. This was scored by Walter Rutherford of the Thurso Golf Club with a 7 iron much to the delight of playing partners Harvey Cowe and Ronnie Mowat.

In Division one scoring was excellent with Grant Coghill making a birdie two at the 5th along with Dougie Thorburn of Thurso. There were a number of two's with Ronnie Gray (Thurso) making two at the 18th, David Mowat at the 7th, Grant Maxwell at the 9th and Ron Mathieson (Thurso) at the 18th. Graeme Dunnett birdied the par five 14th as did Ewan Mackenzie of Thurso. Don Mackay Jnr made birdie at the 6th but dad Don Snr made two birdies at the 12th and the 16th, Dougie Wright of Thurso also birdied the 16th.

Three players made Par figures led by Richard McDonald 76-7-69 with back to back birdies at the 9th and the 10th. Sandy Chisholm 81-12-69 also had a pair of birdies at the 3rd and the 16th and Graeme Cameron of Thurso 77-8-69 was the third to make par. Steve Efemey 77-9-68 with birdies at the 6th and 16th and Bruce Mackay 76-8-68 with a haul of three birdies at 4th, 14th and 16th shared fifth place both one under par.

In fourth place on his own with a great score of 78 -12-66 was Sandy Wright of Thurso which on a normal day would have won. In third place also a great score was Gavin Gunn 75-10-65. There was a tie at the top with Colin Stewart 76-12-64 with three birdies on the front nine at the 2nd, 6th and 8th for a five under par round. Cammie Ross shot the best gross score of 74 in his round of 74-10-64 and his three birdies on the back 9 at 13th, 16th and 18th meant he got the nod over Colin on the countback to win Division One. Both Colin and Cammie must have thought 5 under was good enough to take the trophy but there was a score of seven under to come.

John O'Brien won the nearest the pin on the 18th.

In Division two Andy Bain in his first appearance of the summer made birdie two at the 5th along with Kenny Farmer. There was of course the wonderful eagle for Walter Rutherford (Thurso) as a highlight at the 5th hole. Scoring in Division two was not too impressive but Willie Williamson 92-19-73 made birdie at the 4th for fifth place. David Lyall (Thurso) over wintering at Reay used his local knowledge for 87-16-71 and fourth place. Fresh back from the fairways of the USA was Danny O'Hagan with a birdie at the 8th taking third with figures of 86-16-70. George MacDonald playing tidy golf produced a very respectable card of 88-21-67 to secure second place. The class act in Division two was Billy Dunbar producing the best gross of 80 and a pair of two's to really smarten up his card. Billy birdied the 9th and the 15th in a very steady and immaculate round for 80-18-62 and an outstanding win at seven under par.

A great winning score and a popular win which has been lurking in the wings for some time.
