Summer Cup Round 1 - 01 May 07
John & Hugh start the show on the road

You know summer is here when the Summer Cup starts and there is always keen anticipation of returning good scores consistently to win the much coveted trophy played over 16 weeks. There was only one par on the second playing the most difficult followed by the 3rd giving up only 2 pars which underlines the tough start at Reay. The 5th was the easiest hole and the round produced a total of 15 birdies.

Jim Frew the oldest player was having a difficult round but managed a super birdie two at the 15th to put some gloss on his round. Stuart Greig had the lowest gross in Division Two with an 86-13-73 which included an eagle at the par five 6th hole to take third place. Youngster Hugh Tunn with 93-13-73 produced a steady round for second spot and the top man in the Division with 97-26-71 was Hugh Millar. Nobody broke par as the course bared its teeth.

Birdie Two's in Division one went to Grant Coghill at the 7th and Steve Efemey at the 15th. Cammie Ross made birdie at the 16th and Raymond Taylor in his first appearance of the season was a bit scrappy but made birdie at the 11th. Lee Parnell had his shooting boots on and sank three birdie putts at the 9th for a two, the 11th and the 14th. Gavin Sutherland the Club Champion struggling to find form this year hopefully started his comeback as he found birdies at the 3rd and the 14th in a round of 77-5-72.

Andy Mackay had a steady and uneventful round for 84-12-71 and had to settle for third place on the countback. David Gray shaking of the winter rustiness also made 84-12-71 to take second place with the better back nine. The winner was definitely in a class of his own and is in terrific early season form. John O'Brien the sharpshooter from up west breezed round in 71 the lowest gross score for 71-5-66 with a pair of birdies at the 6th and the 13th. This would have been good enough to win comfortably but the icing on the cake to go three under was a superb 8 iron shot drifting into the pin and snaking down the hole for an ace - the much coveted hole in one. John's ace was admired by Cammie Ross his playing partner.
