Summer Cup & Strokeplay Championship - Season 2007-2008
Summer Cup Round 6/Strokeplay Rnd 1 -
05 June 07
The first round was played on a horrid wet murky day which saw scoring return to normal with the CSS at 69 which is par. This first round of the Strokeplay championship also scores as round 6 of the Summer Cup. The stats showed the 8th as the hardest par and the 5th as usual the easiest par, but birdies were rare with only three conceded by the course. There were no nil returns on the night as everybody remembered the competition is over four rounds. Division two scoring was not setting the heather on fire and in third place was Colin Struthers with a workman like 88-17-71. Stuart Greig was plodding away for second spot with figures of 83-13-70. Clearly Andy Bain has woken up from the winter and after his fine win in the Parsaver trophy at the weekend seems to be on a charge with the best gross of 81 and carding 81-14-67 to be the leader after round one in the hunt for the Keoltag Salver which is the handicap prize. It hasn't done his Summer Cup prospects any harm either as Andy re-ignites his season. In Division one scoring was better however there was no danger of a new course record and despite a birdie at the 13th Lee Parnell has some catching up to do as he only managed an 81. David Mackay also with an 81 made birdie at the 14th. Brad Smith came in with a 76. Donald Mowat with 80-9-71 settled for third place and Grant Maxwell ever present shot 76-7-69 for second and a very neat par round of golf keeping in the hunt for both trophies on offer. Gavin Sutherland with a 73 the lowest gross is leading by three shots after round one for the scratch prize and will be difficult to shift as he is an experienced front runner despite his youth. Gavin birdied the 3rd and finished with 73-5-68 to lie second in the Keoltag Salver. End-of-Document |
