Mens Tournaments - Season 2007-2008

Open Texas Scramble - 29 April 07
Birdies galore for Trio wins Scramble

The Texas scramble is always a fun event with loads of birdies and often amazing scoring and this scramble did not disappoint. The weather was fine and the competition fierce with some close scoring. Birdies and no drop shots is what is required in this fun shoot out.

Sharing 6th place was a Lybster GC team and a Thurso GC team on 61.6 a very creditable score. Lybster lads J.Mackay, J.Munro and D.Miller had birdies at the 4th and a pair of two's at the 9th and the 15th but the better back nine came from Steve Spargo, Donald Jack and Sandy Stewart who had 5 birdies starting at the 1st with a wonderful two and then the 4th, 6th, 13th and the 16th to sneak in on the countback over the back nine.

With a score of 61.2 and 5th place came Dougie Thorburn of Thurso propping up club mates Jim Sangster and P.Sangster shooting four birdies at the two par fives on the outward nine at the 4th and the 6th and back to back birdies at the 16th and 17th in a strong finish. In fourth place was the team of Club Captain Ian Ross partnering Graeme Dunnett and Grant Coghill. Going round in 66 they ended upon 60.6 and had birdies at the 4th and the 6th, there was a blot on the card with a bogey at the 8th which was careless but further birdies came at the 12th and the 16th.

David Mackay, Andy Bain and Grant Maxwell of Reay took third place despite an opening bogey in an untidy start. They recovered with a birdie at the 4th, a two at the 9th and then a good finish with birdies at the 16th and the 17th for a final score of 60. Second place went to another team from Reay led by the wily Alistair Gunn, Gavin Gunn and Gavin Sutherland with no drop shots and a grand total of 7 birdies for a score of 58 as birdies came at the 2nd, 4th, 6th to be out in 31 and a great run at 13th, 14th and 15th with the final birdie at the 17th to come home in 31 for a gross score of 62.

You wouldn't normally expect that to be beaten but there was an exceptional effort from yet another Reay team who had a great tally of 9 birdies going out in 31 and back in an incredible 29 shots for a gross 60 and some amazing accurate putting on the greens. The final score was 55.2 and there were only three birdies on the front nine in a wee run at the 2nd, 3rd and 4th for Steve Efemey, Murray McGlasson and Richard McDonald. The back 9 saw a bigger purple patch with a run of birdies at the 11th, 12th, 13 and 14th for four in a row, a further birdie at the 16th and the icing on the cake a grandstanding two at the 18th playing to the gallery for that magical 29 shots. Murray McGlasson provided the power off the tees, Steve Efemey the stylish shots and Richard McDonald the silky touch on the greens.
