Thurso Open -
11 August 07
AFTER having to close the course at the beginning of last week because of heavy rain, organisers of Saturday's Thurso Open, sponsored by the Central Hotel, gave the weather forecast a lot of attention. Thankfully there was a bit of a break in the bad weather and 120 players got round twice, with only the later starters on their second rounds having to contend with the rain. After the morning round, Thurso club champion Doug Thorburn had established a three-shot lead in the scratch category over clubmate, Jim Sangster with a quality round of 67, two under par. Young James Hendry from Douglas Park, near Glasgow, was next best on 71, a shot in front of Ray Heddle (Stromness). In the afternoon, Thorburn had only four pars in his outward nine of 36 and Sangster had closed the gap to just one shot after getting to the turn in one under par, after a very impressive opening three holes. True champion that he is, though, Thorburn pulled out all the stops on his inward nine that he covered in three under par for a winning total of 134, the best in recent memory. Sangster stuck to his task but couldn't find any birdies on the way in and had to settle for the runner-up spot with a total of 140. Things were a lot closer in the handicap section at the end of the first round with Stephen King and Ron Mowat leading on nett 65, a shot ahead of Murray McGlasson, Blair McIntosh and Orcadian Andrew Milne. Five other players were only a shot further away. Predictably, there were fewer scores in red figures in the afternoon but Blair McIntosh improved by a shot to nett 65 for a total of 131 and was a comfortable winner of the Gunnach Trophy, beating Kirkwall 's Martin Fleet by five shots. After a disappointing first round by his standards Fleet was the only player, apart from Thorburn, to have an under-par round, and his afternoon 68 (nett 64) gained him second place behind McIntosh. Prize-winners (Thurso unless otherwise stated):
