Mens Tournaments - Season 2007-2008
US Novcommsta - 15 July 07
At last some good weather and the turn out reflected this making a large field to contest the Open. Great to see so many from Wick and Thurso competing and there were competitors from as far as Loch Ness GC and Murcar in Aberdeen. The course was immaculate after the recent poor weather and the greens superb as there were no less than 53 birdies potted. The 6th took at battering giving up 8 birdies and the 5th and 14th surrendered six each. The CSS stood at 69 which showed conditions were fair and the second came out as the hardest par with the third the easiest. In Division two Alec Mackay made a birdie at the 3rd and Dave Phillips from Thurso made a very good birdie two at the 7th. Bill McIntosh made a fine birdie two at the 5th but then blew a good round running up an 8 at the eight but still finished 91-19-72. Three shared a nett 71 and these were Trevor Henderson (Thurso) 84-13-71, George Robertson 91-20-71 and Jerry Abbot 86-15-71. Eann McIntosh (Thurso) 89-19-70 made a birdie at the par five 14th and with the better back nine took 4th place edging out Danny O'Hagan on 84-14-70. Ron Mowat (Thurso) with an 88-20-68 had to settle for third berth losing out on count back to Ian Ross, the eight at the 17th was his downfall. Reay Club Captain Ian Ross playing with cracked ribs shot the lowest gross of 81 despite an ugly 7 at the second a triple bogey, and he managed a birdie at the 6th in his round of 81-13-68 claiming second spot. First place went to Thurso golfer Mick Ross 88-22-66 with two 7's on his card and a very steady round.
Division one saw a veritable birdie feast. Brian Arris from Murcar made birdie at the 8th recovering from the 7th with a 9 and then a very untidy 11 at the 14th ended his challenge. Bill Noble (Thurso) had birdies at the 5th and the 13th and then hit self destruct. Jim Swan (Thurso) made birdie at the 6th and Steven Spargo also of Thurso had birdies at the 14th and 17th in his round. Chris Hobson made birdie at the 17th, Evan Sutherland at the 11th and Jim McLeod (Thurso) made a two at the 9th. Andy Prater (Thurso) had a double birdie haul at the 6th and 14th and stable mate Jim Meiklejohn had a good back nine with birdies at the 13th and the 18th. County Champion Don Mackay had an average round but two two's to smarten up his card with birdies at the 5th and the grandstand finish at the 18th. Alec Anderson had an up and down round which include three birdies at the 8th, 10th and 11th. Brad Smith had an off day but still birdied the 6th and Murdo MacDonald made birdie at the 14th. Ian Ritchie 79-9-70 in a steady round made birdie at the 13th. Alistair Bell of Thurso put in a super effort at 76-7-70 with three birdies at the 3rd, 5th and 10th in a pretty flawless round. Grant Maxwell 77-7-70 birdied the 6th and 11th again tidy figures and Alan Forbes of Wick 73-3-70 with a birdie at the 5th wasn't far from the prizes. There was a birdie two for Gavin Gunn and Graeme Cameron (Thurso) at the 15th and Donald Mowat at the 5th. C.Burness (Thurso) made birdie at the 12th whilst Colin Stewart wasn't at his best but still birdied the 2nd and the 11th. Fourth best score was nett 69 and three shared the score. With a strong back nine which included birdies at the 12th and a two at the 18th Lee Parnell 73-4-69 got the nod. Nick Doherty (Thurso) 79-10-69 made a super two at the 15th with tidy par figures and a recommendation for best dressed golfer. Gordon Steven (Wick) 73-4-69 cracked in three birdies at the 10th, 13th and 14th in a very good round. Third place belonged to Gavin Sutherland with 73-5-68 and he maintained his recent run of four birdies per round. Gavin had birdies at the 2nd, the hardest hole, the 3rd, 6th and the 10th. Raymond Taylor claimed the best scratch score of 71 with birdies at the 6th and 17th in his 71-4-67 and second spot. Top man in the Division was John Nicolson who shot 72-6-66 with birdies at the 8th and the 14th and in a very close countback John snatched the Title from Mick Ross (Thurso) with the birdie at the 14th making the difference. So the U.S.Navcommsta Champion for 2007 is John Nicolson of the Reay Golf Club.
