Wilson Cup (Dale - Shetland) - 23 & 24 June 07
Thurso Golf Club, represented by Brent Munro, Jim Sangster, Alan Swanson and Doug Thorburn, have won the Wilson Cup for the first time since 1988. The bare statistics from the weekend competition at Dale, home of Shetland Golf Club, show that Thurso won all their matches in lifting the coveted trophy but not that they required extra holes in their group matches against both Wick and Whalsay after comfortably beating Stromness. Thurso's opponents in the final were the holders, Kirkwall, who won the cup in Thurso last year. Kirkwall lost their first match to hosts Shetland and needed an emphatic victory over Lybster, who had already beaten Reay and Shetland, on Sunday. Once again it was so near yet so far for Lybster as a vital putt was missed which would have taken them to the final. Thurso's first pair, Thorburn and Munro, who had been beaten in both the Wick and Whalsay matches, were in great form in the final and defeated Steven and Ewan Rendall by seven holes. The other pair found in-form Martin Fleet and Peter McKinlay a bit of a handful but did enough to limit the damage to four holes down and so the team triumphed by three holes. Team captain Alan Swanson singled out their youngest member, 18-year-old Brent Munro, for special mention for his nerveless display in every match. The winning team in '88 was Graeme Dunnett, Alan Urquhart, Alec Logie and Stephen Spargo. End-of-Document |
