Wilson Cup - 05 & 06 July 08
Thurso retain title in tight finish
The Wilson Cup is a team competition competed by 8 clubs from Caithness, Orkney and Shetland. The 8 teams are divided, by draw, into 2 groups in which a round robin is played in a two ball foursomes matchplay. At the end of 3 rounds the top team from each group compete for the cup.
At the end of Saturday's play all the teams in group one had secured a win, whereas in group two, the Sunday round was a sudden death between Reay and Thurso. Thus at start of play on the Sunday there were six potential winners.
The group one games resulted in Stromness and Orkney (Kirkwall) managing wins against Shetland and Lybster respectively. Kirkwall then progressed to the final by virtue of better hole differential over Stromness.
The group two games resulted in Wick and Thurso managing wins against Whalsey and Reay respectively. Thurso's win against Reay secured their place in the final.
Thus the teams of Kirkwall and Thurso started out at 2.30pm on Sunday afternoon in pursuit of the cup.
Throughout the 2 games the competition was close. In game one the teams could not be separated after 18 holes, the match halved. However, in game two, the match was level after 15 holes, but then Thurso took the 16th to go one up and followed this with another win at the 17th to go two up and retain the cup.
This was the third year Kirkwall have contested the final and they very much hope to be in the final on their home course in 2009.
