September Medal - 05 September 09
Crawford performs beast in conditions

Friday nights tend to find your average Caithness golfer out with his slide rules trying to extrapolate various weather forecasts. However, with a certain weather girl firmly assuring us that a high pressure was not just pinned, but firmly pinned, to the UK and that the entire country would be basked in glorious sunshine, slide rules were cast back into the decade whence they came and summer attire was looked out. How disappointing then that, come Saturday morning, Reay was 'basked' in persistent light drizzle aided and abetted by an equally persistent westerly wind.

Not to be deterred Reay's golfers set out with umbrellas firmly in hand in search of the holy-grail that is the September Medal. In fact so tough were the conditions that the standard scratch for the day rose to 72 with only handicap reductions to be applied.

The winner in Category 2 was the only man on the day to threaten his handicap; Ewan Crawford cruising round in a more than respectable 85 net 69, comprehensively beating the net 74s of both Sandy Chisolm and Grant Coghill; Sandy's better inward half elevating him into P2 on the podium.

In category 1 it was a dour battle of the 5 handicappers: Lee Parnell; Wayne Mowat and John O'Brien going toe to toe over the links. Taking the laurels and Cat 1 Medal on this occasion was Parnell with a net 73, edging Mowat (73) into second place on a countback, with Lee's 2 back nine birdies proving crucial. O'Brien was only a further shot back on 74 for a third place finish.
