Rotary Open - 03 May 09
O'Brien wins trophy
Aptly enough the venue for the Rotary Open rotates between Thurso GC and Reay GC, with this year being Reay's turn to play host. And despite the atrocious conditions the event was supported heartily by members of both clubs as well as Wick's golfing fraternity.
It proved to be a really tough day on the links with just a solitary soul beating his handicap and the competition scratch upto an elevated 71.
In category 2 Tim Hawes, John Disbury and Donald MacKay fought it out for the minor places, with all three Reay golfers bagging 32 points. Closer analysis of the back nine showed Tim to be the unlucky one, missing out on a podium place to John in 3rd and Donald in 2nd.

Top in category one was Thurso golfing stalwart Terry MacKay. No doubt Terry's vastly improved short game contributed to a few up and downs and the category 2 title with an excellent 34 points in some severe weather.
In category 1 it was a battle between youth and experience for third spot, and on this occasion the youthful Peter Sangster edged out the experienced Ronnie Gray on countback, with both Thurso club mates posting a fine 35 points.
Taking the runners up spot was the in-form Evan Sutherland with a handicap equalling 36 points.
This year's Rotary Open Winner was John O'Brien. O'Brien brought all his winter golfing experience to bear as he made a mockery of the conditions to shoot an awesome gross score of 69 for 43 points.
