Reay Senior Open - 02 August 09
Evan continues good form
The second leg of this weekend's golf-athon was the Seniors Open, with a select field of those gentlemen who have attained the ripe old age of 50.
Taking the honours and laurels in the scratch competition was Evan Sutherland. Obviously his outing on Saturday against sprightlier opposition stood him in good stead!! Evan's front nine of 37 didn't get off to the same explosive as Saturday's, however, Sunday's more serene approach had similarly devastating effects as Evan came home in 39 to take the scratch trophy with a gross 76.
Just one shot back on 77 was Fred Groves who must be ruing a most un-Fred-like several put at the 17th which cost him dear. Not to be perturbed, though, Fred picked himself up, dusted himself down and stiffed it at the 18th to win a consolation nearest-the-pin prize.
In the Handicap section, Fred Groves' 70 was again one shot off the pace. Again, some consolation for Fred in that he beat Sandy Chisolm into second place on countback.
Taking the plaudits, with a very steady 79 nett 68 was ex-Captain Ian Ross. Whilst many of his fellow competitors unravelled over the gruelling final few holes, Ian kept his nerve and steered his ship home with a string of nett pars and birdies over the back nine.
