George Couper Challenge - 10 April 10
With the sun making a rare April appearance in Caithness, the county's golfers took to the links in their droves this weekend.
On Saturday Reay's golfers competed in the George Couper Challenge; a one category stableford event. However, despite the fantastic weather, only half a dozen players managed to play to their handicaps.
In third place on the day was Willie Williamson whose 39 points, including 4 pointers at stroke indices 1 and 2, was good enough pip Andy Bain for third place, but not enough to challenge for a winning start to the season.
The Winning score in this early season thriller was 41 points; a tally shared by Bruce and Andy from the clan MacKay, both 10 handicappers.
Bruce, normally more at home in driving sleet, managed to acclimatise to the unusual April conditions and shoot two steady halves of 20 and 21 points for his 41 points; a birdie at the 6th the highlight of Bruce's sturdy round.
Fractionally slower out of the blocks was Andy who reached the turn in 19 points, but a run of six pars in a row to finish gave the more senior of the Mackays an inward return of 22 points and victory on countback.
