Club Championship & Monthly Medals - Season 2010-2011
May Medal - 01 May 10
The May medal at Reay this past weekend appeared to be a tale of two categories, with the higher handicappers struggling somewhat more than their low handicap compatriots.
Category 1 saw Don MacKay making a welcome return to form. Out in a one-over par score of 35, Don got back on level terms with a fine birdie three at the 10th and then dipped under the par barrier at the short 15th with his second deuce of the day (his first coming at the equally short 5th). MacKay finished off the round with three steady pars to post a superb gross score of 68 for a net 66 and the category one glory.
Hot on his heels was young Gavin Gunn and younger Mark Parsonage, both stomping round in net 67s. However, despite birdies at the 10th and 16th Mark had to concede second place to Gavin on countback; a birdie 3 for Gunn at the 17th being the critical factor.
In category two things proved a tad trickier with nobody able to match their handicap.
Closest to doing so on the day and winner of the category two medal was Ross Munro; another youngster showing the wizened veterans a thing or two.
Ross struggled a bit to the turn utilising 11 of his 14 shot handicap along the way. However, Ross knuckled down on the back nine and started churning out net pars and better, culminating in a fine birdie two at the 15th; a fine iron shot to an awkward pin placement.
Out early in the morning, Munro posted a net score of 71 that the rest of the category two field were unable to surpass.
Closest to doing so was one of the last players to take to the links; Andy Swan. Despite matching Munro's net 71, Andy was undone by the statisticians responsible for the countback calculations.
Slightly less confusing than the much maligned cricketing equivalent; the Duckworth Lewis method, Andy lost out by half a shot on the back nine!
Completing the podium line-up was one of Reay's left handed elite Chris Hobson, who despite being out on the golf course for over four hours took only 86 strokes for a net 72 and third place.
