Ronnie Wallace Open - 11 April 10
With high pressure pinned to the UK, Sunday brought forth another glorious April day in which to just be outside was a pleasure. However, a record turnout of golfers form Reay, Thurso and Wick took it to another level of utopian bliss by entering the Ronnie Wallace Memorial Open on the sun drenched Reay links.
The overall Winner of the Ronnie Wallace trophy was Thurso's Neil Jackson with two five over par halves of 39 and 40 respectively, giving Neil a total of 79 net 64. The high point of Neil's round was a birdie four at the long par five 14th, which was playing into a stiff breeze by the time Neil's group arrived there.
Narrowly missing out on the trophy was young Mark Parsonage, whose consolation was to take the category one spoils. Out in a superb level par 34, including birdies at the 5th and awkward 8th and home in 39 gave Mark a gross 73 equalling Neil Jackson's net 64, with Neil ultimately winning the trophy on countback.
The minor placings in category one had to be untangled with some computer power and head scratching with Grant Maxwell, Ronnie Gray and Cammie Ross all shooting nett 67s. After some careful calculations Grant was awarded 2nd place, Ronnie 3rd and Cammie 4th.
Category 2 was equally as tight with Sandy Chisolm coming out victorious over Willie Williamson on countback after the pair had recorded net 66s. And what better way to celebrate his category 2 win than with a bottle of malt for nearest the pin at the 18th. And 'yes' Sandy did make his two!
Completing the roll of honour in category 2 were Liam Bremner and Graeme Henderson with net 69 and 70 respectively.
And the days lowest gross went to Dougie Thorburn; the scratch golfer plotting his way around the links in 72 strokes despite a ropey start - four over after three holes Doug played the rest of the course in 2 under par with birdies at 4, 6, 13 and 14.
For the records, the CSS on the day was 69.
