J&G Sutherland - December Medal - 06 December 08
Bell rings for Stuart to win by 4...

Winter's grip slackened just in time to allow Saturday's J&G Sutherland December Medal to go ahead at Thurso Golf Club.

After a couple of weekends without golf, there was a sense of relief that at least the winter medals continued to be unaffected by the weather.

Saturday's round surely provided an early Christmas present for Stuart Bell who was a runaway winner of the medal with an excellent nett 65, four shots clear of second placed Billy 'WJ' Sutherland.

Playing in the same group, Bell and Sutherland both got to the turn in 46 strokes with Bell holding the advantage courtesy of a higher handicap than his rival who has been in good form this winter. Both continued to play steadily until dropping a few shots over the closing holes but there was no doubting who would win as Bell gained his first victory in club competitions.

Jim Meiklejohn had 38 shots for each half as he recorded the day's lowest round, by three shots from Bryan Ronald, and a nett 70 for third place in the medal. Steve Osborne was in good shape after his front nine but let things slip a bit on the way in and had to settle for fourth place on nett 72.

Angus Cameron, too, was in very good shape on the way out but, despite a fine birdie three at the seventeenth, was seven shots worse on the back nine and shared fifth place with Gavin Souter who birdied the thirteenth on his way to a nett 73.
