J&G Sutherland - March Medal - 07 March 09
Calder sole player to break 80...

Encouraged, no doubt, by a weather report that said 'Fine morning, rain later in the day' there was a good turn out for Saturday's J&G Sutherland March Medal at Thurso Golf Club. Unfortunately the forecast was well wide of the mark with rain coming down in buckets in mid morning resulting in about a third of field failing to return a score.

In such demanding conditions Gary Calder was the only player to break eighty and his fine gross 77, nett 71, earned him the March Medal after beating Angus Cameron on count back.

Calder was four over par for each half with his only blemish a double bogey five at the fifth that was compensated for with a birdie at the eighth. A run of pars on the first five inward holes gave him the necessary protection against the demanding closing holes.

Cameron is having a run of good form, having been runner up in the February Medal and winner of last week's round of the Winter Eclectic, and this continued on Saturday as he got to the turn in five over par.

In sharp contrast to the winner, Cameron grabbed a birdie two at the fifth only to double bogey the eighth hole. Worse was to follow though as he tangled with the trees on the final hole to run up a medal losing seven.

Peter O'Hare, having a rare winter outing also saved his worst till last with a double bogey at the eighteenth but still managed to claim third place from Walter Rutherford, both returning nett 73's.

Rutherford's round was of the World War 2 variety, out in 39, back in 45.

Another player making a rare winter outing, Charles Burness, was fifth on his own with nett 75, a shot clear of Ronnie Mowat, who had the very worst of the weather, Bryan Ronald and Dave Lyall.
