J&G Sutherland - October Medal - 18 October 08
Young Sangster wins against his elders...

A couple of common threads ran through the two competitions played at Thurso Golf Club last week. The weather verged from bad to atrocious on both Saturday and Tuesday and players from Halkirk came out on top each time.

Saturday's Medal sponsored by Halkirk firm J&G Sutherland turned out to be a triumph for young Peter Sangster who saw off his vastly experienced playing partners and the rest of the field with a very commendable nett 71 to win by a shot from fellow villager Bryan Ronald.

Sangster had used four of his six handicap after five holes but struck back with a birdie at the sixth and another at the thirteenth with only one dropped shot between them. In common with the rest of the field he dropped shots over the closing stretch, where each of the final three holes were played in an average of two over par by the field, but he still came back in 39 shots for a very good gross 77, nett 71.

This rounded of a good week for the talented youngster who won the handicap section of the Highland Junior Championship at Spey Valley a couple of days earlier.

Ronald continued his run of good late season form with the day's low round of 76 for his nett 72. He had only one birdie, at the seventh, but had nothing worse than a bogey on his card that showed 38 shots for both nines.

Count back was required to sort out third place after both Ed Wylie and Ian Macphee returned nett 73's.  Wylie got the nod with the better inward nine after a pretty steady round apart from a slip up at the short eighth, statistically the easiest hole on Saturday. Macphee, six over after five holes, brought himself right into contention with back to back birdies at the eighth and ninth holes. He was still very much in contention after seventeen holes only top come a cropper at the eighteenth, a fate suffered by a good number.
