Eclectic 13 - 31 March 09
Reid holds on overall for trophy...
The weather was much kinder for the final round of the EGGS Winter Eclectic on Tuesday encouraging an excellent turn out. The wind (despite being a warm one!) did increase markedly as the morning went on and had a significant effect on scoring over the last three holes.
Jim Johnston made light of this problem though by scoring enough points on the other holes to survive a blank on the sixteenth and an inward nine total of eighteen points saw him emerge as winner after count back with George Mitchell after both returned 34 points. Mitchell had a very good outward nine for 20 points but, like most of the field, struggled on the way in.
Donald Jack and Ian Fraser were next best on 32 points, one ahead of Gary Henderson who also had a 20 point front nine.
Fraser and Johnston both improved their overall Eclectic positions to finish on nett 60.5 and 61 for fourth and fifth places respectively but the top three positions remained unchanged and so Sandy Reid was the winner by half a shot from Ian Manson with nett 57. Pat Valentine, on nett 59 was third.
Eclectic 12 - 24 March 09
Valentine sneaks penultimate round...
Valentine continued his good form in the penultimate round of the EGGS Winter Eclectic on Tuesday, his 36 point winning effort taking him a point clear of Jim Hawthorn, Sandy Reid and Jim Johnston.
The winner had 18 points for each half with back-to-back birdies at the eighth and ninth holes.
Hawthorn saved his best for the inward nine when he scored 20 points.
Competition leader Reid was very steady with 18 points going out and 17 on the way in and Jim Johnston had a very good front nine of 20 points.
The top two in the Eclectic, Reid and Ian Manson both failed to improve their scores on Tuesday and this allowed Valentine to get two shots closer to them.
So, with the final round coming up on Tuesday, the top five are Reid (nett 57), Manson (57.5), Valentine (59), George Mitchell and Ian Fraser(61.5).
Eclectic 11 - 17 March 09
Johnston goes over 40 to win...
Jim Johnston was an emphatic winner of Tuesday's EGGS Winter Eclectic with a first class total of 41 points, four ahead of David Warren.
Although the winner drew a blank at the fourth hole, he still got to the turn in 21 points and added a further 20 points on the way in for good measure. Warren showed the benefit of scoring at least one point at every hole in finishing two points clear of Doug McCowan.
Sandy Reid had a poor round by his standards but it contained a priceless birdie at the eighth that took him into the lead on nett 57, a shot clear of long time leader Ian Manson.
Pat Valentine also had a birdie at the eighth to take him into third place on his own with nett 60.5 with George Mitchell a shot further back in fourth place.
Two rounds of this competition remain.
Eclectic 10 - 10 March 09
Ronnie wins it on last 2 holes...
It was a similar story on Tuesday for Round 10 of the EGGS Winter Eclectic when a 'fine morning' failed to materialise and a good drenching was the order of the day.
There was some good scoring though with considerable improvements to eclectic scores being made.
Tuesday's winner with 35 points was Ronnie Williamson but it was down to the last two holes for him to be declared winner as Doug McCowan, having his first round in the competition, also scored 35 points.
Williamson did well on the par three holes, getting pars on five out of 6 while McCowan's only failing was a double bogey on the short eighth.
Sandy Reid was next best on 34 points with Pat Valentine(32), Gary Henderson(31) and David Warren(31) the only other players to break the 30 point barrier.
There were some early fireworks from the top two in the Eclectic, Reid and Ian Manson, as Reid birdied the first and Manson responded by chipping in at the second for a birdie three. Both went on to get further birdies, Manson at the eighth and Reid at the thirteenth.
With Reid also improving his score at two other holes, things are very tight at the top of the leader board with Manson still leading on nett 57.5, only half a shot clear of Reid.
Pat Valentine, who had two twos in Tuesday's round now shares third place with George Mitchell who improved by three shots, both on nett 61.5.
Three rounds of the competition remain.
Eclectic 9 - 03 March 09
Bad weather stops play...
Unfortunately Round 9 fell victim to the snow on Tuesday but there are still four rounds left to chase Manson's total.
Eclectic 8 - 24 February 09
Dar wins round by a point...
In contrast, there were no significant changes on the leader board after the eighth round of the EGGS Winter Eclectic with Ian Manson retaining his lead on nett 59.5, two and a half shots clear of Sandy Reid.
The eighth round was won by Dar Sutherland with a 37 point effort that overtook Ron Ritchie's total by a point.
David Warren was next best on 34 points, one ahead of Pat Valentine and Les King.
Eclectic 7 - 17 February 09
Jack continues good form...
The snow did disappear soon enough however to allow the senior members to compete in Round 7 of the EGGS Winter Eclectic on Tuesday.
With players clearly desperate for a game there was a good turn out and some surprisingly good scoring as well.
Donald Jack is always the man to beat in eclectic competitions and was in good form on Tuesday as he returned a 36 point total to win by a point from George Mitchell. Jack, who had already parred every hole in the previous four rounds played, added to his list of birdies with an excellent three at the seventh hole. For Mitchell it was an opportunity for back to back wins but, in an otherwise fine round, he failed to score a point on the sixteenth and so the opportunity was gone.
Jim Hawthorn had a fine back nine in finishing third on 34 points, two ahead of competition leader Ian Manson.
It was a very good day for Manson as he improved on three holes in a first class outward nine and he now has a very good nett score of 59.5.
Sandy Reid improved by no fewer than five shots, including two's at the ninth and twelfth holes in the process, and now occupies second place on nett 62.
Jack improved by half a shot to share third place with Sandy Wright, both on nett 62.5.
Eclectic 5 - 03 February 09
Mitchell handles weather to win...
Tuesday's fifth round did not enjoy such good weather but George Mitchell made light of the conditions and became a convincing winner with 38 points, three ahead of second placed David Warren.
Les King and Donald Jack shared third place with 32 points.
Ian Manson retained the lead in the overall Eclectic with nett 62.5, half a shot clear of Jack. Fraser and Wright are next best with 64.5, half a shot better than Valentine and Ronnie Williamson.
One score that does not appear on the eclectic sheet is a two at any hole and there is now a seven week roll over for the 'twos sweep'. Game on for the seniors!

Fraser wins on final 3 holes...
The seniors got a very good day for the fourth round of the EGGS Winter Eclectic and there were some good scores to match the conditions.
Ian Fraser and Pat Valentine both had first class 39 point efforts with Fraser declared the winner with the best total over the final three holes.
Jim Buchan and Dave Thom earned handicap cuts for their 37 point efforts after finishing a point ahead of Sandy Wright.

Another Sandy did the job this time...
After a seventeen point front nine, Wright moved up a gear on the back nine to record 20 points and clinched first place on Tuesday after count back again, this time with Ronnie Williamson. For the record, it has to be revealed that Wright once again visited the trees on the eighteenth but escaped with a bogey five on this occasion. Williamson had 19 points for the front nine and played well on the back nine apart from a blank in the long sixteenth hole.
Winter Stableford winner Sandy Reid kept up his good form with 36 points for third place, a point clear of Pat Valentine, Donald Jack, Ian Manson and Jim Buchan, all likely contenders for the Eclectic, currently lead by Wright with nett 66.5.
Eclectic 1 - 08 January 09
Sandy keeps winning...
Sandy Wright could scarcely have made a better start to the EGGS Winter Eclectic with two wins out of two rounds played.
The first round, played last Thursday, was won with 34 points after count back with George Mitchell who had the same score. Wright had one of the day's only two birdies but a visit to the trees at the last took the gloss off his day.
Jim Johnston and Bill Hossack finished a point behind the leading pair.
