Freswick Round 2 - 27 September 08
Keith wins by three for trophy
Only the committed or coerced turned out for the second and final round of The Freswick Cup in miserable conditions at Thurso Golf Club on Saturday but there was some commendably good scoring that resulted in the competition and standard scratch scores being the same.
It was a good day for the golfing Calders with both father Davie and son Gary going round in nett 69 that earned a win for Gary and third place for Davie. Gary's gross 75 also turned out to be the lowest round of the day, by a shot from Bryan Ronald.
The main interest on Saturday though, was the destination of the Freswick Cup and this was made clear in no uncertain terms by Keith Dreaves who also scored a nett 69 for second place on Saturday and a two round total of nett 134, three shots clear of Innes Mitchell who had a nett 71 on Saturday.
It was by no means plain sailing for Dreaves on Saturday as he ran up a nine at the fourth hole but he was pretty consistent after that and was a worthy winner of this lovely trophy.
Freswick Round 1 - 20 September 08
Keith produces the goods, again
A handful of players set themselves up for a shoot out in the second and final round of the Freswick Trophy at Thurso Golf Club with fine scores in good conditions on Saturday.
Top of the list, as he has been a few times already this season, is Keith Dreaves who beat Bob Robertson on count back after both returned nett 65's. Off a 19 handicap, Dreaves had only one double bogey, at the tenth, on his card and three pars in the remaining holes ensured victory.
Robertson began in ideal fashion with a birdie at the first and got to the turn in level par after a further birdie at the eighth. Another birdie was added at the fifteenth on the way to a two over par inward nine and a gross 71, the lowest of the day.
Innes Mitchell, Bob Black and Allyn Sutherland finished in that order after all scoring nett 66's to be in close contention.
All of those players had their handicaps cut and that just might encourage the rest of the challengers who were two or three shots further back.
