RNLI Open by Pennyland Service Station - 14 September 08
Allyn takes the cash
Competitors in the Pennyland Service Station sponsored RNLI Open at Thurso Golf Club on Sunday enjoyed calm conditions after having endured winds of varying speed all week.
The event turned out to be the icing on the cake for young Thurso golfer Allyn Sutherland who has worked hard at his game and reaped the benefits during the season. On Sunday displayed great consistency in a round of gross 78, nett 66, to win the event on count back from Reay's Murray McGlasson who had a gross 76 that included two birdies and two double bogeys whereas the winner had only one of each. Sutherland and McGlasson headed the Category 1 handicap section with Thurso pair Andy MacGregor and Ronnie Gray completing the prize list with nett 67 and 69 respectively.
Category 2 was dominated by players from the home club with Alan Kennedy coming out on top with a nett 67 coming from a round composed entirely of pars and bogeys, a model of consistency.
Lenny Murray (68) and Bob Parsonage (69) who finished second and fourth in this section were also very consistent apart from the fourth that cost both triple bogeys.
Consistency was hardly the name of the game for third placed Eann McIntosh but persistence certainly was as his inward nine of 39 was ten shots better than his outward nine as he too returned a nett 69.
Bryan Ronald, winner of the scratch award at the Donald Campbell Memorial Open at Reay last Sunday, made it a double at Thurso on Sunday with a fine effort of 73. Out in level par with birdies at the fifth, eighth and ninth holes, Ronald was only two over after seventeen holes but a visit to the trees on the eighteenth saw him slip to four over.
Wick duo Gordon Steven and Alan Forbes finished a shot behind Ronald with Steven's better inward nine earning him second scratch prize.
