Summer League 10 - 25&26 June 08
Graeme steals it on countback...

The weather could scarcely have been more different for the two rounds of the Summer League at Thurso Golf Club last week with Wednesday wet and miserable and Thursday a perfect golfing day, warm and virtually wind-free.

Any score above 30 points was a considerable achievement on Wednesday and three players managed to do that with Eann McIntosh coming out on top with 36 points, one ahead of Ian Macphee and four better than Jason Simpson. McIntosh and Simpson made their scores on the outward nine with 22 and 18 points respectively whereas Macphee bucked the trend with 18 points on the way in, based on four straight pars from the tenth hole onwards.

Not surprisingly, scoring was on a different level the following day with a about a quarter of the sixty strong field scoring 36 points or better, reducing the Competition Standard Scratch score by a point in the process.

Count back was needed to sort out the top three places and resulted in Graeme Cameron, Neil Jackson and Darren Sinclair finishing in that order after all scored 41 points.

Cameron, who plays off a nine handicap, was two over par for both nines with birdies at the fifth and fifteenth. Jackson had a very good front nine for 22 points and Sinclair was even better with 23 points, ten of those coming from successive birdies at the sixth, seventh and eighth holes.

Three players scored 38 points so count back had to be applied again. This resulted in Walter Rutherford being awarded fourth place ahead of Roddy Harper who got the rest of the sweep money.

Stephen Fidler just got the satisfaction of getting his third good score so far in the League. Rutherford had a fine inward nine of 21 points; Harper was only one over par at the turn with 20 points, a total shared with Fidler.

Three of Thurso's Wilson Cup team were in good form with Alan Swanson, Doug Thorburn and Brent Munro scoring 37, 36 and 35 points respectively.
