J&G Sutherland/February Medal - 13 February 10
Jackson was in full action to win
The J&G Sutherland February Medal went ahead at the second time of asking on Saturday at Thurso Golf Club after being called off because of snow the previous week. Thankfully conditions were good for the healthy turn out of competitors on Saturday.
Out in the second pair, Harvey Cowe was the first to make his mark by going to the turn in 39 shots including a birdie at the long seventh hole. His inward nine wasn't quite so good but he did set the standard with a nett 69.
Playing just behind Cowe, Ronnie Matheson was in good form and covered the opening nine in 38 shots, the best of the day. Unfortunately he lost a ball at the sixteenth hole and failed to make a return.
Meanwhile, the regular trio of Clark Grant, Ronnie Gray and Lenny Murray were getting their rounds underway with varying degrees of success. Gray had a double bogey at the opening hole, Murray birdied the second and Grant birdied the third. Murray fell off the pace in spectacular fashion at the fourth hole, Grant had his ups and downs but Gray recovered well to get to the turn in 40 shots despite a disappointing bogey at the short eighth hole.
Gray played a very steady inward nine of 38 shots, four over par for a best of the day gross 78, nett 68, beating Grant by a shot. Grant's score was matched by retiring Club Captain Pat Valentine who also birdied the third hole on the way to a gross 79.
The best was saved to last though as Neil Jackson started with a par at the first and completed a good front nine in 40 shots. Despite a double bogey at the tenth, Jackson continued to play well and was only a couple of shots worse on the way in, despite a triple bogey at the seventeenth, and so returned a winning nett 67.
Grant's fine birdie three at the last hole earned him third place ahead of Valentine and Cowe.
Donald Sutherland shared best gross of the day with Gray after an excellent inward nine of 37 shots. Gary Calder was the only other player to break 80, by a shot, and Terry Mackay had the day's only other birdie with a two at the third hole.
