J&G Sutherland/January Medal - 23 January 10
Bell wins opening 2010 medal
Members of Thurso golf Club got back on to permanent greens for the first time in seven weeks for Saturday's J&G Sutherland Medal. The slow thaw of snow and ice helped to have the course in good condition. The concern of most players was whether or not they would be in good condition after the long lay off.
There was some evidence of rustiness as, unusually, the first hole proved to be the most difficult with an average score of almost two over par.
Stuart Bell, with the highest handicap in Saturday's field, managed a bogey five at the first and had four pars on his way to a total of 43 for the outward nine, good going for the 22 handicap man. He didn't manage any more pars but kept his nerve on the way in to finish with a nett 68 to win the Medal by a shot.
Keith Dreaves is becoming accustomed to finishing runner up in medals and he added to the experience on Saturday when a fine inward nine gave him the nod over Gary Calder who had the day's best gross score of 75 in also recording a nett 69. Calder had a two over par inward nine to thank for relegating Trevor Henderson into fourth place.
Club Captain Pat Valentine finished alone on nett 70 with Ali Bell and Jason Simpson a further shot back.
