Wyllie wins by one shot

In other circumstances a low turn out for Thurso Golf Club's J&G Sutherland March Medal might have been expected as a strong wind and frequent showers made life difficult for the players. However the snow had gone so there was huge relief that it was 'game on' for the first time in four weeks and 37 members contested the last of the winter medals.

Ed Wyllie has featured in the top ten of all the winter Medals, apart from January, and deservedly hit the jackpot on Saturday with a winning nett 69 to beat Stephen Spargo by a shot.

Three over par after two holes, Wyllie stuck to par for the rest of the front nine that he covered in 38 shots, a feat equalled only by Sandy Stewart. Back to back birdies at the thirteenth and fourteenth holes were probably crucial to his victory as he could afford a couple of sixes at the sixteenth and seventeenth holes.

Considering the conditions, Spargo had an excellent round of gross 76, the lowest of the day, by three shots, from the winner and Gary Calder.

Out in 39 shots, with a bogey five at the eighth the only real slip, Spargo was only three over par for the inward nine with a solitary birdie at the thirteenth hole.

Jason Simpson did his bit for the higher handicap players, recovering from a triple bogey eight at the difficult fourth hole to return a nett 72 for third place.

Donald Sutherland finished his round with a birdie three for a nett 73 to win fourth place on count back from Calder and Stewart who had the gloss taken from his day with a big eight at the tenth hole after earlier birdies at the second and seventh holes.
