Jim wins on last hole

Jim Sangster, course record holder at Thurso Golf Club, equalled the par of 69 in Saturday's J&G Sutherland October Medal but had to rely on his last six holes to deny the challenge of Davie Irvine and win the Medal.

Playing off scratch, Sangster was out in one under par courtesy of a birdie at the par five seventh and his only deviation from par on the way in was a bogey at the long par three twelfth hole.

Irvine, an eighteen handicap player, was ahead of the card at the turn as he was eight over par for the front nine despite double bogeys at the seventh and ninth holes. His inward nine was fairly similar with sixes at the thirteenth and seventeenth holes probably costing him victory.

Club Captain Pat Valentine had a fine outward nine of 38 shots but bogeyed every hole on the way in until a par at the eighteenth to finish third on nett 70. It was a similar story for Nicky Doherty and Ali Simpson who fared better on the outward half before recording nett 71's.
