Club Championships Round 2, May Medal & Belhaven Best qualifier - 30 May 09
Young Pete wins by half a shot
Saturday's J&G Sutherland Medal at Thurso Golf Club was played in fine conditions and there was some fine scoring to match.
Andrew Main and Peter Sangster both returned nett 65's with Sangster declared the winner after count back separated them by half a shot.
Sangster certainly made an impressive start with birdies at the first and third holes. A further birdie at the eighth got him to the turn in level par. His back nine was different but equally impressive as his only deviation from par was a bogey at the eleventh hole. The sum of his efforts was a gross 70, the lowest round of the day.
A feature of Main's round was his being only one over par on the par three holes.
There was no question about the feature of third placed Stephen Bremner's round as he had a hole in one at the eighth for that most unusual bird, an albatross.
There was an understandable reaction to this success as he had double bogey and two treble bogeys at the next three holes. However the young man deserves great credit for putting all of this behind him and getting fours and fives at the remaining holes for a nett 66.
A trio of 13 handicap players, Terry Mackay, Hamish Boyd and Kevin Morris, were next best on nett 68.
