There was a good entry for the Comm Bar Open, Thurso Golf Club's first open event of the season, last weekend.

Peter Sangster's golfing potential has been obvious for some time now and he is part of the Scottish Golf Union's coaching system. He certainly made his mark in the Comm Bar Open with equal best scratch score and the best handicap score that earned him the Comm Bar Trophy.

Sangster was one under par at the turn, matching par at every hole apart from a birdie four at the seventh. A further birdie was achieved at the eleventh on his way to a gross 71, nett 65.

The scratch award went to Doug Thorburn who also had a gross 71 with both nines covered in one over par. Thorburn also birdied the seventh as well as the eighteenth.

Jim Sangster who was second in the scratch section actually scored three birdies on his way to a 72.

Another Junior involved in the SGU coaching set up, Mark Parsonage, finished two shots behind Peter Sangster in the 0-12 Handicap category with a nett 67 and second place.

Reay's Lee Parnell also had a nett 68 for third place with club mate Cammy Ross a further shot back.

Keith Dreaves' nett 66 won him first place in the higher handicap category by a shot from Terry Mackay.

After steady front nines both players improved their totals on the way in but the biggest improvement on the inward nine was by Alan Kennedy who followed an outward nine of 47 shots with a nine shot improvement for a nett 70 and third place.

Andy Swan, also with nett 70 claimed fourth place after count back over Willie 'WJ' Shearer.
