Bert Loomes Memorial & Belhaven Best qualifier - 06 June 09
Promising junior McEwan continues to push
Greg McEwan, one of a promising crop of junior players at Thurso Golf Club, had a splendid set of results last week. Having played to his handicap in last Saturday's Medal he then went on to score 38 points in the Summer League on Wednesday but those were simply curtain raisers to the main event as he had a handsome win in Saturday's inaugural Bert Loomes Memorial trophy competition.
Playing off an eighteen handicap, McEwan had a good front nine of 42 shots with his only double bogey coming at the opening hole. He had every reason to be happy with his back nine that had nothing worse than a five in it, a couple of fours to finish, a five over par total of 39 and a round of nett 63.
Andrew Lannon finished in second place, two shots behind the winner, and his card provided a great model for perseverance.
After seven holes his score was not at all promising but birdies at the eighth and ninth holes changed all that and a steady back nine earned him a nett 65 and a two shot handicap cut.
Similar comments could be made about Ricky Eunson's round when a four shot improvement on the back nine earned him third place on count back ahead of Hamish Boyd, Blair McIntosh, who eagled the thirteenth, and Billy Sutherland after all of them scored nett 67.
Charlie Burness and Alan Swanson were next best on nett 68. Swannson had the best scratch round of 70 that included a three under par outward nine of 32 with birdies at the second, fourth, sixth and seventh holes.
