Stuart Campbell Open sponsored by Ashley Ann - 25 July 09
Trevor wins his first trophy of the weekend
The double header of open events, the Stuart Campbell and Gala opens, has become a very popular feature of the golf season at Thurso Golf Club. For some years now a trophy has been awarded for the best nett aggregate for the two events but this has never been won in such exceptional fashion as this year when the same player, Trevor Henderson, won both events.
Conditions were good for Saturday's Stuart Campbell open, sponsored by Ashley Ann, and Henderson took full advantage with a tremendous nett 62 to win by two shots from Ronnie Mowat.
Three over par after three holes, the winner only dropped one other shot on the way out and had six straight pars on the way in before dropping shots at the sixteenth and seventeenth holes. Mowat was pretty well playing to his handicap on the front nine but was only four over par on the way back with a birdie two at the twelfth the highlight.
Gordon Morris completed the prize list in the higher handicap section with a nett 66.
Wick's Martin Macdonald struck a blow for the healthy number of visiting players by winning the lower handicap section with a nett 67. He had a fine one over par inward nine to thank for his win as it relegated Stephen Cowie to the runner up spot on count back.
Allyn Sutherland was a couple of shots further back in third place.
The day's low round belonged to Stephen Spargo with 36 shots for both nines. The low point would have been a double bogey seven at the seventh and the high a birdie three at the sixteenth.
