Harper still has it to win this round

Former Club Champion Roddy Harper showed that he still has what it takes when winning the Wednesday session of the Newsbeat Summer League at Thurso Golf Club last week.

Harper had five birdies in a round of nett 68 and 42 Stableford points to edge out Eann McIntosh by a point.

Twenty one points for the inward nine was a popular score on Wednesday with McIntosh and third and fourth placed Graeme Henderson and Willie Shearer emulating the winner.

Keith Dreaves had 21 points on the front nine but lost out on count back to Henderson and Shearer, all returning 40 point totals.

Fifty four players started the Thursday round but only 20 completed it as the course was hit by a violent thunderstorm.

On one of the hottest days for many years Sandy Wright was in hot form on the front nine as his two over par 37 gave him 22 points. He wilted a little on the back nine but his overall total of 39 points gave him victory by two points from Jimmy Manson and Stephen King with Manson's inward nine of nineteen points earning the second place sweep money.

Bryan Ronald had 'only' 37 points on Wednesday but extended his eight round total to 294 to lead Nicky Doherty by four points with Walter Rutherford a further three points back.
