Summer League 3 - 29/30 April 09
Harvey just edges Manson

The mid week sessions of the Newsbeat Summer League began last week at Thurso Golf Club and the first headline hitters were Harvey Cowe and Jimmy Manson who both scored 41 points to win on Wednesday and Thursday respectively.

Cowe only had one birdie in his round, at the eighth, but a 20 point outward nine complimented by a 21 point inward nine gained the spoils.

There was an excellent performance by second placed Doug Thorburn who was two under par for his round to earn 37 points. Thorburn had four birdies on the way out and one more on the way in.

A 19 point inward nine earned vice-captain Ali Simpson third place after count back from Walter Rutherford, both having scored 36 points.

Roddy Harper, with four birdies in his round, got the remains of the sweep money after count back from Donald Sutherland and Kevin Morris who also scored 35 points.

Jimmy Manson did his bit for the higher handicap players on Thursday as he belied his handicap of 22 to blaze to the turn in five over par for 24 points. Understandably, he struggled a little over the closing holes but he had earned a well-deserved victory by then.

Sandy Stewart and Peter Sangster had very similar cards both having 19 points on the way out and 18 on the way in so the last six holes were decisive in awarding second place to Stewart.

The last six holes were also crucial in separating Doug McCowan and Gordon Morris with fourth place going to the former after both returned 36 points.
