Mens Tournaments - Season 2009-2010

Ulbster Cup Round 2 - 09 May 09
Better second round wins it for John

Saturday was a good day for John Bain at Thurso Golf Club when he headed the 66 strong field in the second round of the Ulbster Cup and also made up a five shot deficit on the first round leaders to win the cup, courtesy of a better second round than Bryan Ronald who also had a total of nett 139 for the two rounds.

Innes Mitchell, Mark Parsonage and Keith Dreaves all finished a shot back on 140.

Bain's winning round on Saturday was a nett 67, beating Len Murray and Mitchell by a shot.

David Dunbar and Walter Rutherford were next with nett 69's, one better than David Irvine, who got some sweep money, and Mark Parsonage, Nicky Doherty and James Taylor, who did not!

Another plus for Bain was that he leads the qualifiers for the handicap section of this year's club championships.

The scratch section is lead by course record holder Jim Sangster who had the day's low round of 72 on Saturday.

Things should become a little clearer on the qualifying front after the second round in a couple of weeks time.

Ulbster Cup Round 1 - 02 May 09
Souter wins on countback

A strong wind that blew for much of the day sent scores upward and resulted in the Competition Standard Scratch Score being two shots higher than the Standard Scratch Score for the first round of the Ulbster Cup played on Saturday.

Gavin Souter and Bryan Ronald were the only two players to beat nett par with 67's, Souter winning first place on count back. Souter birdied the eighth hole as did Ronald, who had already birdied the third and seventh holes.

Keith Dreaves edged out Charlie Burness for third place after both returned nett 69's and Jack Johnstone failed to gain sweep money after count back that saw Mark Parsonage and George Munro get fourth and fifth places, all having scored nett 70.
