Mens Tournaments - Season 2009-2010

Winter League Final - 20 March 10
Valentine claims trophy

Thurso Golf Club's new Match Secretary, Angus Cameron, was a convincing winner of the final round of the Winter League on Saturday. Cameron's 39 point effort gave him a two point advantage over Pat Valentine and Trevor Henderson. The winner was a bit up and down on the way out with birdies at the second and eighth balancing a couple of blank holes in a total of 19 points. His inward nine had no birdies but was more consistent and yielded a further 20 points.

Henderson had an excellent outward nine of 21 points but came to grief at the seventeenth to allow Valentine to claim second place.

Valentine was a model of consistency, scoring at every hole, with birdies at the eighth and fifteenth holes added in for good measure.

Cameron's fine round got him to a best three round total of 105 points, one off the lead held by Dave Lyall but Valentine went one better for 106 points and claimed the Winter League trophy courtesy of the best lowest round.

Cameron was alone in third place, one clear of Ronnie Gray and by two from Keith Dreaves.

Winter League 3 - 20 March 10
Gray strolls to win with birdies galore

As the winter season draws to a close, it is clear that the destination of all the winter trophies at Thurso Golf Club is coming down to the wire.

The field for the penultimate round of the Saturday competitions was a bit lower than usual as there was an Alliance fixture at Golspie but those who did play got a fine haul of birdies so there was a fair amount of movement in the overall leader boards.

Ronnie Gray was a decisive winner on Saturday with a good 39 point effort that contained birdies at the third, fifteenth and final holes.

After making a mess of three holes around the turn Dave Lyall had an enjoyable twenty minutes with birdies at the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth holes that helped him to second place on 37 points.

Davie Calder also birdied the thirteenth as well as the first but came a cropper at the seventeenth and had to settle for third place on 36 points.

Keith Dreaves had a fine front nine but had too many sixes on the way to finish in fourth place on 35 points, one ahead of Pat Valentine and Sandy Stewart.

As things stand Lyall has a four point lead in the Winter League over Dreaves and Valentine with a best three round total of 106 but around ten players are still in with a good shout of winning.

Winter League 2 - 21 November 09
Cameron wins with good finish

Scoring in the second round of Thurso Golf Club's Winter League on Saturday did not reach the level set by Eann McIntosh and Bryan Ronald in the first round but there were some good rounds, none the less.

Angus Cameron and Mick Ross were the day's top scorers with 38 points. Both had 19 points for each half of their rounds and it was a superb finish by Cameron that earned him first place with the best last six holes including four points from a birdie three at the eighteenth. Ross also had a four point hole with a birdie at the eighth.

Stuart Bell also had 19 points on the way out with a four point birdie at the eighth but a double bogey at the seventeenth proved costly and he had to settle for third place with 37 points.

Jack Johnstone was next best on 36 points, one ahead of Keith Dreaves, Pat Valentine and Bob Robertson.

Winter League 1 - 31 October 09
Eann wins first league round

Eann Mcintosh could scarcely have made a better start to Thurso Golf Club's Winter League on Saturday as he amassed the huge total of 46 Stableford points in heading the 32 strong field.

While a number of holes have been shortened on the front nine, three of those have had their pars reduced by a shot, so making Stableford scoring more difficult. This hardly applied to McIntosh on Saturday though, as he stormed to the turn in three over par for 24 points. This total included two four pointers for birdies at the long fourth and the shorter eighth holes. His inward nine was also very impressive. After dropping his only point of the day at the eleventh, he went on to achieve five more pars and a total of 22 points for the nine.

Bryan Ronald has been in superb form all season and this continued on Saturday as he finished in second place with 41 points after going round in two under par. Ronald birdied the first, eighth and sixteenth holes and had an eagle two at the thirteenth but the gloss was taken off his round as he ran up a double bogey six at the last after carving a five wood safety shot from the tee and losing his ball.

Ian Macphee had three birdies, at the first, second and eighth holes in an outward nine of 21 points and went on to finish in third place with 39 points, one ahead of Davie Calder and Charlie Burness.

Dave Lyall also broke the 36 point mark after an inward nine of 23 points made up for a poor outward nine.

Handicap reductions are not usually made during the winter but the winner's total could not be ignored and a two shot reduction has been applied.
