Club championship qualifiers at Thurso Golf Club enjoyed good conditions for the quarter finals last Monday.
The quality of golf in the scratch section was excellent. Top qualifier and defending champion Bryan Ronald had five birdies in his round and his opponent, club captain Ewan Mackenzie, was only one over par when the match ended at the fifteenth hole.
As expected, previous champion Alan Swanson had to go the full distance to beat off the challenge of young Peter Sangster and Innes Mitchell and Bob Robertson earned the respect of Doug Thorburn and Jim Sangster before going down by two and one.
Keith Dreaves, beaten finalist last year, got off to a good start in this year's handicap championship with a comfortable victory to set up a semi final with Stuart Bell who had a walk over from Graeme McLeod who could not get back from an engagement in the south in time.
The match between Walter Rutherford and Charlie Ross needed 21 holes, completed in the gathering gloom, before the former claimed victory.
Greg McEwan needed all eighteen holes to beat Terry Mackay by 1 up.
Any hopes that Ronnie Gray had of adding the senior championship to his recent senior open win were thwarted by Donald Jack in a closely contested match that ended on the eighteenth.
The other senior quarter finals resulted in comfortable victories by Pat Valentine, John Morrison and Willie WJ Shearer who beat Jim Buchan, Dave Lyall and Peter Knight respectively.
