J&G Sutherland - August Medal - 07 August 10

Last weekend at Thurso saw entry numbers depleted due to the annual pilgrimage of many members across the Pentland Firth to participate in the Stromness Open. This however did not deter those remaining behind from producing some fine scoring over the two days.

First up on the Saturday was the J&G Sutherland medal, which was to be the last time the competition would be sponsored by the garage. Thurso Golf Club would like to take this opportunity to thank Edward Sutherland for his lengthy support of this competition and wish him all the best in his well-deserved retirement.

Out on the course Jack Johnstone would have been disappointed with his 2 double bogies in his last 4 holes for 83(17)66 as this resulted in him losing out on countback to Alan Kennedy 80(14)66 and Harvey Cowe 77(11)66. Harvey's birdie on the 13th helping him pip Alan for 5th place.

In 4th place on his own was Colin Mackay 77(12)65 whose medal aspirations faltered with double bogies on 8th & 16th in an otherwise faultless round.

The countback ruling also had to be applied to separate the top 3 places with WJ Shearer 81(17)64 being relegated to 3rd place, a birdie on the 2nd and a splattering of par 3's contributing to an excellent score.

In second place was young Greg McEwan, obviously enjoying his experience of helping the greenkeepers as he had nothing worse than a bogie on his card, and coupled with a birdie on 15th, this took him home in 77(13)64.

Winner of the medal, fresh from his success at the Durness Open the previous weekend, was Bryan Ronald with the lowest Gross score of the day and a 66(2)64. Bryan was out in 34 with his only blemish a bogie at the 9th after birdies at the 6th and 7th. He made up for that by storming home in 32 shots with birdies at the 14th and the difficult 16th and adding another trophy for his ever expanding trophy cabinet.
