Stuart Campbell Open sponsored by Ashley Ann - 24 July 10
The double header of opens in July with the Stuart Campbell on the Saturday and the Gala on the following day has become a well established and popular part of Thurso Golf Club's fixture list.
This year's events were blessed with good weather and attracted big entries from all of the county's clubs and beyond.
On a day of superb scoring, the feats of the main prize winners in the Stuart Campbell Open, sponsored by Ashley Ann, stood out.
Sixteen year old Jordan Youngson claimed the trophy with a nett 62, just one shot ahead of Bryan Ronald who won the scratch award with a superb gross 65.
Youngson, an 18 handicap player, ran up a triple bogey seven at the second hole but sorted that out with three straight pars and got to the turn in six over par. Despite getting double bogeys at the par three twelfth and fourteenth holes he was only five over par for his inward nine.
2010 club champion Ronald was actually disappointed with his four under par gross 65 as he was five under par at the turn after scoring birdies at the fourth, fifth, sixth, eighth and ninth holes. The birdies dried up after the turn though as he had pars on every hole apart from the twelfth where he got a bogey four.
Stephen King needed count back to win the lower handicap category from Stephen Fidler, both returning nett 64's.
Lachie Sutherland was third on nett 65 with Donald Sutherland two shots further back in fourth place.
Thurso's vice captain Ali Simpson has earned the admiration of many with his recovery from major surgery earlier in the season and will probably regard Saturday's win in the higher handicap category as icing on the cake. Simpson, Keith Dreaves and Graeme McLeod finished in that order after all scoring nett 65's.
Wick's Hamish Mclean also needed count back in winning fourth place from Thurso's Stephen Bremner and his club mate William McLean.
