Summer League 1 - 10 April 10

There was real enthusiasm around Thurso Golf Club on Saturday as around 70 members began the quest to be champion of the ever popular Newsbeat Summer League that runs every week from now until the first week in September. The competition traditionally features very good scoring and that was certainly the case on Saturday, probably helped by summer weather, not always a traditional feature!

Jason Simpson did not play much golf during the winter but third place in the March Medal indicated some form and this was confirmed on Saturday as he accumulated 40 points to win by a point from Roddy Harper and Harvey Cowe.

Simpson, who was an eighteen handicap player was all pars and bogies in scoring 22 points on the way out and, despite a couple of double bogeys on the way in, still managed another 18 points.

Harper and Cowe both had 17 points going out and 22 points coming in and it was Harper's last six holes that earned him second place. Harper, a former Club Champion had used all of his four handicap by the fifth hole but settled down after that and birdies at the eighth, tenth, thirteenth and eighteenth holes got him round in gross 70 and 39 points. Cowe had no birdies in his round but fairly stormed home in only two over par, a fine performance by the 11 handicap player.

Geordie Bain also had no birdies in his round but was very consistent in amassing 38 points for fourth place.

Doug Thorburn showed excellent early season form with the day's low round of one under par 68 for 37 points, a total shared by Pat Valentine who had a fine 20 point outward nine.

Next best were father and son duo, John and Malcolm Morrison on 36 points.
