Summer League 10 - 17 June 10

As the Newsbeat Summer League at Thurso Golf Club approaches the half way stage the front runners are showing no signs of slipping up.

Graeme Henderson is having a great season. After having one of the competition's highest ever scores of 46 points a few weeks ago, Henderson scored 40 points on Wednesday for another win, on count back from Stephen Bremner. The winner had 'only' 18 points on his front nine but was just three over par for his back nine for 22 more points.

Bremner had 20 points for both nines and had a strong finish after a blank at the eleventh hole.

Iain Graham also had a blank on his inward nine of 21 points but still held off Frazer Sparling on count back for third place after both scored 39 points.

Sparling was out in 20 points and finished with a birdie three at the eighteenth hole.

Rory Hadden and Alan Kennedy shared 38 points with Jason Simpson, Paul O'Rourke, Willie 'WJ' Shearer and Doug Mackenzie a further point back.

The group of seniors, who gather at 8 am each Thursday for the League, looked on with disbelief as Club Secretary Bob Black was seen on the second fairway. Black is not noted for early starts but perhaps he should make a change if Thursday's performance was anything to go by. He had birdies at the sixth and eighth on his way to 22 points at the turn and despite running out of steam over the last three holes scored a very creditable 39 points.

His relatively poor inward nine allowed Clark Grant to claim first place however as he had 19 points for the last nine, two better than Black. Grant balanced a blank with a birdie on both nines.

George Munro had another fine round in demanding conditions later in the day to win third place from Alan Coghill and Nicky Doherty on count back, all scoring 37 points. Jim Buchan and Ronnie Matheson were next best with 36 points.
