Summer League 11 - 24 June 10

The Wednesday competitors in the Newsbeat Summer League at Thurso Golf Club enjoyed the better conditions last week and this was reflected in the scoring with the Standard Scratch score going down by a shot on Wednesday and up by one on Thursday.

There was no doubt about the week's top scorer as Graeme McLeod recorded a nett 61 for a massive total of 44 Stableford points to win on Wednesday. McLeod had birdies at the sixth and eighteenth holes and had 22 points for both nines.

Jordan Youngson, in second place with 41 points, also had a remarkable round. Playing off a 19 handicap Youngson opened and closed his front nine with birdies, was only three over par and amassed 24 points. Understandably, his back nine was hardly in the same class but he did well to overcome a blank at the tenth hole and add 17 more points.

Charlie Burness also had 17 points for his back nine to add to a 22 point outward nine and claimed third place on count back from Frazer Sparling after both scored 39 points. Sparling had an excellent level par front nine that included a birdie at the fourth and an eagle two at the eighth but a blank at the seventeenth took the gloss from the round.

Walter Rutherford and Greg McEwan both had 38 points, one ahead of Donald Sutherland.

Caithness rugby stalwart Blair McIntosh was a clear winner on Thursday with his 39 point effort being three clear of his nearest challengers.

McIntosh had only one par in his outward nine of 20 points but he had birdies at the sixth and seventh. Like a good many others, he came to grief at the tenth but bounced back with five straight pars on his way to a total of 39 points.

Obviously fishing for another mention in the golf reports, Stephen Fidler had a fine 19 point inward nine to claim second place ahead of Ronald Mackay after both had 36 point efforts.

George Mitchell and Brent Munro were next best on 34 points with former club champion Munro, now based in Edinburgh, showing that he still has it with five birdies in his round.

Graeme Henderson remains the front runner in the League with a best eight round total of 298. George Munro on 290 is the only other player with an average better than 36 points per round.
