Summer League 5 - 12 May 10

George Munro hit a purple patch in Thurso Golf Club competitions last week with two wins in two outings.

His first came in the Thursday session of the Newsbeat Summer League when he had one of the best scores to date in the competition with 40 points. Birdie threes at the opening hole of each nine gave Munro all the encouragement he needed as he went on to win by two points from Clark Grant. Grant had 19 points for each nine with his only real mistake a triple bogey at short fifth hole.

Hamish Boyd managed 20 points on the way out, despite recording a blank at the ninth, and got 16 more points on the way in for third place. Jimmy Meiklejohn and Gavin Souter were next best on 35 points.

The Standard Scratch score went up by a shot in testing conditions the day before but Roddy Harper put a fine round together to score 38 points to win by two points. Harper got an uncharacteristic double bogey at the second hole but immediately birdied the next hole and got 19 points for the first nine. The same points total was to follow for the inward nine, helped considerably by a splendid birdie, par, birdie finish.

Graeme Henderson also had a good finish with pars at the closing two holes getting him into second place on count back with 36 points.

Stephen Osborne also had a par at the last to thank for winning third place from Pat McVey after both scored 36 points.

McVey's was a steady round with the excitement provided by playing partner Graham Harness. After a totally forgettable tee shot at the fourteenth hole Harness holed out with a full iron shot for a spectacular birdie. As they say, it's not how? but how many? that matters!
