Summer League 8 - 02 June 10

Thirty nine points was the winning score on both days of the Newsbeat Summer League at Thurso Golf Club last week.

The League is around a third of the way through with eight of twenty two rounds played.

Current club handicap champion Stephen Bremner needs a good score in the final qualifying round to get to the knock out stages again this year. He showed that he is in good form with a winning 39 point effort on Wednesday. Out in 20 points with a four point birdie at the seventh hole, Bremner got over a blank at the tenth to add a further 19 points on the way home.

Second placed Andrew Lannon also had 20 points on the way out despite running up an eight at the seventh hole and finished well for 18 more points for his inward nine.

Mick Ross had 37 points for third place. Steady play earned 19 points on the way out and a birdie three at the thirteenth made up for a blank at the tenth in his inward 18 points.

Greg McEwan, Steven Lowe and Jason Simpson were next best and finished in that order on count back after all scored 36 points.

The day's low round belonged to club champion Bryan Ronald. In a topsy turvy round Ronald followed up three straight bogeys from the third hole with three straight birdies from the seventh. Two more birdies were to follow at the thirteenth and eighteenth holes in his gross 72.

A two over par inward nine for 21 points earned victory for George Munro on Thursday as count back was needed when he and Alf Williamson both scored 39 points. Munro only dropped one point to the card, at the fifth hole, in a very steady round that had a solitary birdie at the fourteenth hole. Williamson had an inspired two over par outward nine that yielded 24 points. He slipped up at the fifteenth and sixteenth holes but finished with a defiant par at the last.

Jimmy Meiklejohn had 19 points for both nines for third place with an eagle two at the eighth the highlight of his round.

Doug Thorburn headed a trio of players on 37 points with yet another gross 68. One under par at the turn with birdies at the fourth and eighth holes, a birdie at the thirteenth balanced a bogey on the eleventh in a level par inward nine.

Ali Bell also birdied the fourth and eighth holes in his round but lost out to a very steady Ronald Matheson on count back for fifth place.
