Ulbster Cup Round 2 - 08 May 10
Peter Sangster took a four shot advantage over his nearest challenger going into Saturday's second round of the Ulbster Cup at Thurso Golf Club but left the door slightly ajar after recording a nett 71 in the second round for a two round aggregate of 136, two under par.
His closest rivals Stephen Cowie and Peter Knight failed to improve their scores but Bryan Ronald, Stephen Bremner and Clark Grant who all had nett 71 in the first round certainly did with Ronald most successful with a nett 66 on Saturday. This included four birdies, three of those coming in a superb inward nine of two under par 32. His most spectacular effort was a three at the long sixteenth where he got home, into a strong wind, with a drive, five wood and putt. However, he bemoaned a bogey five at the short par four eighth after being just short of the green from the tee.
All of this meant that young Sangster was not caught and won the lovely Ulbster Cup, one of the oldest played for at Thurso, by a shot from Ronald.
Bremner had a fine inward nine to beat Greens Convenor, Malcolm Morrison for second place on count back on Saturday after both returned nett 67.
Michael MacGregor and Frazer Sparling earned some sweep money with their nett 68's and the group of six players on nett 69 included Doug Thorburn who scored his third gross 68 in eight days over his home course and now has to add a shot to his score with his plus one handicap.
Ulbster Cup Round 1 - 01 May 10
Players in the first round of the Ulbster Cup at Thurso Golf Club on Saturday obviously found conditions to be demanding as the Standard Scratch Score went up by a shot and only one player beat nett par.
That player was Peter Sangster who won by four shots after going round in level par for a nett 65.
Sangster had only two deviations from par with a bogey at the sixth immediately compensated for with a birdie at the sixth. All the hard work that this young player puts in has had it's rewards recently as he finished second in his age group in the North Boys championship at Torvean with a very impressive second round of 68 and second in the North Schools championship, as reported in the Courier.
Stephen Cowie was three over par after two holes on Saturday but settled down after that to claim second place with nett 69, one shot ahead of Peter Knight who finished alone in third place after a birdie at the last hole.
Clark Grant improved by eight shots on the inward nine to claim fourth place from a group of seven players on nett 71.
