Thurso v Wick Inter County - Season 2000-2001

Contents:- -HOME-|-AWAY-

HOME - Thurso - January 2001

The first legs of the annual inter-club squash matches took place at Thurso Squash Club recently.

Wick were unable to field a ladies' team - so Thurso had the luxury of a 3-0 lead in both the Blackwood Trophy and the Park Hotel Shield.

The first team men were able to build on this to give Thurso a 7-1 first leg success. The highly experienced Willie Jappy was wick's only victor.

The second team match was closer, with the Wick visitors winning three out of the five matches. There were remarkable fightbacks by Thurso's Alistair miller and Wick's Bruce de Wert, who both came through to win after losing their first two games.

The return legs are in Wick on Saturday, February 24.

THE second leg of the annual inter-club challenge between Wick and Thurso, held in Wick Squash Club last Saturday, was dominated by the Thurso team who won all the 'A' matches.

There were, however, some gutsy performances by the Wick players and on another day the results of some of them could have gone Wick's way. James Georgeson lost an extremely close game to Colin Paterson by three games to two after the Wick player had won the first two games. Colin made a spirited comeback and eventually played the better of the two in the fifth game.

John Brunton also had a close game with Sandy Stewart. The Thurso player needed all his vast experience to win 15/12 in the fifth.

The Thurso ladies were too strong for their Wick counterparts, although Kerry Sinclair managed to get one game and played well in her first-ever match.

Thurso also dominated the "B" team competition, losing only one match out of the seven played.

The one that Wick won was probably the match of the day with Andrew Bremner pipping fellow junior Martyn Cook 17/15 in the fifth game. The match between Donald Pollard and Jim Cassidy was another close encounter, with Jim edging it 15/14 in the fifth.

The Thurso team again dominated the ladies' competition, herefore taking the Blackwood Trophy by an overall score of 15 matches to Wick's 1.

The Thurso team also collected the Park Hotel Shield, winning 12-4 over the two legs.
