Jim just beats Sandy - 29/03/03

Thurso Squash Club staged the final singles' tournaments for 2003, at the weekend.

The junior tournament attracted a big entry and club officials were pleased to see some primary school youngsters taking part and performing well against their secondary counterparts.

The junior plate went to Scott Davidson but he was pushed all the way by Steven Miller.

In the main competition Louis Morrill beat young Martin Gunn in the first semi-final but Martin is certainly one for the future with his never-say-die attitude.

In the other semi, Craig Gardner triumphed over John Georgeson but again the defeated player is one to watch. The final was between buddies Louis and Craig and, despite the best efforts of the latter, Louis won in three games.

The girls final was won by Donna Sinclair but Louise Campbell (Janices' bairn) gave a good account of herself for just playing her first few games of squash.

The super-veteran final was between Alan Williamson - a name many times featured on the trophy - and the new boy Guy Owen, who just won, although Alan put up a doughty defence.

The younger veterans attracted a large entry and the competition certainly got off to a titanic start with a five game thriller between Fred Groves and Jimmy Cassidy. It was Jim who emerged victorious.

By the semi-final stage the stink of Deep Heat and Ralgex filled the air as Jim Georgeson defeated Ian McElroy and Sandy Stewart sneaked home against Guy Owen.

The final was closely contested right up to 13-all in the fifth game but James kept his nerve to take the last two points and his second title.
